Do I need a survey?

Japanese knotweed is an aggressive non-native plant species. It is governed by legislation and is now a risk to property in the UK. A property is perceived to be affected by Japanese Knotweed if it is discovered within or close to the boundaries of the property. When you are buying or selling land which is affected by knotweed it should be accompanied by a full Japanese knot weed survey and report. A Japanese Knotweed survey will include:

• Formal Japanese Knotweed Identification
• A technical investigation
• An accurate recording of where the Knotweed is
• Extend of the risks to the property
• Recommended actions and feasibility study
• Clear pricing for any recommended removal and management plans

The report should be carried out by a suitably qualified person, such as a PCA certified surveyor in Japanese Knotweed CSJK.

Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Risk Categories

RICS released 4 categories to help understand the level of risk Japanese Knotweed poses to a property. The proximity of the knot weed to habitable areas and boundaries defines the category and whether any structural damage has been caused.
